Signs your family has gone football mad in these European championship days:

- The phone calls. It is dad, who is in Denmark on a conferance. But he hasn't called to check in or say hi, oh no. He wants to know which teams are playing tonight and when the games are on.

- You actually know the answer to the questions above without having to check.

- You have promised your mother that you two would go and see the new Harry Potter movie together, but you both agree it'll have to be on a day with no football matches.

- You time making dinner either in between matches (there are two on each night) or in the halftime break.

- In the middle of the match, you can tell the others watching what would happen in the group if the result stands.

- You're surprised by news showing that something other than football is happening in the world. You then promtly ignore said news, even if it's something wonderfully mockable the Shrub has said.

- You make a note to make Americans call football by its proper name when Norway comes invading.

- You flirt by making football euphemisms.

- You update your LJ with football entries and think this perfectly normal.

Sometimes I think I'm the only person in Scandinavia who doesn't care about football. *Hangs head*

Yup yup...

I'm actually more interested in the Championships whenever Norway is playing. As in... I'll sit down and watch it then, and may the lord have mercy on those who thinks differently.

I'm not watching much this time. Probably as it gets a bit closer to the final. Oh... wait... how long is EM on for? Seriously, I'll be in England for part of the time. Probably best to stay out of the pubs any day England is playing. (I'm thinking of cheering for France.)

It's on for another two weeks, give or take.

It would be nice to have Norway in and all, but I'm actually a bit glad Norway isn't always in every championship. It's just too much noise to deal with every two years.

I was at the mall yesterday, having dinner at a mexican restaurant, and they sent Denmark- Bulgaria on this big screen. I watched - and taught my youngest sister all about it. She's my little apprentice in the world of football. Dad does not care about it, but Mum's strangely more affected. The two other sisters are randomly interested when either Norway plays, or there's some hunk playing.

Oh, and the second youngest sister is cheering for Bryne, because everybody else is cheering for Viking. Though Bryne is the one winning games at the moment.

Yeah, my mum is also a great football watcher, actually moreso than dad. But only a wee bit. They used to take baby me on Bodø-Glimt matches and were friends with several parents of now Bodø-Glimt players. I blame my football madness on them.

I'm not much of a football fan (although it was funny to hear about France beating England 2-1, Dead Ringers did an excellent sketch on it)

Oh yes, and I agree about making America using the correct words ^_^

Heh, don't worry, I need help in a lot of things ^_^

I don't mind playing football, and it turns out I'm quite good in goal... I just don't enjoy watching any sport really... just not my kind of thing.

Sports fanatics

No idea if you care, but this is exactly what it was like in Calgary, Canada during the National Hockey League playoffs. Drove the entire city and country mad. Quality family time was Dad explaining the playoff system to his hitherto hockey-ignorant children, who bought as many as eight car flags and drove around the city flying them and honking the horn even when there wasn't anything hockey-related going on. Church activities were scheduled around games, things like recitals and concerts that couldn't be rescheduled had people designated to be official score-getters, which would be announced between pieces. Colour-blind people were no longer disabled, because the only colour to be seen was Red (Colour of the Calgary Flames Jersey).

Ah, to be a sports fanatic.

Not surprising - Canada loves its icehockey. As you should, you kick ass at it.

Didn't dratted Florida win it in the end? Shame.

Sure was...

Despite the fact that we won he 5th game putting us in a good position...

I've never played Ice hockey much, but watching Canada trounce America in the Winter Olympics was a joyous time...

The 5-2 score is comparitive to how English people felt about the 5-1 score against Germany at football ^_^

Heh. There's nothing better than giving your nation's nemesis a good whipping. Norway always likes to beat Sweden. Of course, we're rather sucky at icehockey, but we usually get more golds than Sweden in the winter Olympics. We're actually the third or the second most gold-winning nation in the Winter Olympics. Go us.

I've got nothin' on any of those. And I'm part Dutch! I'm supposed to breathe football! Great is my disgrace...

P.S. Could you invade the Czechs for practice? Stinkin' ex-commies beat us 3-2 because the ref wanted to make a little on the side.

Ey, calm down!

Say what you want, but last night's match got me cheering for the Dutch team, and that says something. And I am whole Dutch :P But really, it was an excellent match, good, real football.

The score: 2-1 for the Netherlands, two yellow cards, and some dirty tricks. And that were only the first 25 minutes!

It is a shame we lost, really. But it was, like I said, an excellent game, and I actually enjoyed watching the Dutch team play. O_O That is new.

*looks sadly to the Anonymous title above this post* Wish I could start my own journal. Stupid school and all the work that comes with it!

It was indeed, a brilliant game. I'm a little weak for the Czecks from fond holiday memories, so I was kinda cheering for them. But still, Holland was brilliant. You deserve the second spot, not sucking Germany who couldn't even beat *Latvia*.

*pats* There, there. It was a kickass game and Holland played very well. Instead of invading the Czeck Republic, let's hope they trounce Germany and kick them out of the tournament and you guys in. The Germans have *sucked* so far. Boo! Boo!

*looks at the fields behind her house, with their paired goals* Football field. Not soccer. Bad Americanisms.

I hafta ask, though- what'm I supposed to call American football if I call 'soccer' Football? I'm more an NFL fan than a 'soccer' fan. (Mainly because my family likes American football, and isn't terribly interested in 'soccer'- we get enough of it just from having games in the fields behind us at least twice a week during the summer. And the annoying kids trying to climb on my swingset/fort/area, and people yelling. [Darn those public schools near my house!])

Well, the rest of the world calls it "American Football".
What's the reason for all the padding, anyway?

Date: 2004-06-21 05:00 am (UTC)

So taht no one might mistake it for rugby, perhaps?

Lemme guess- you've never watched American Football, 'ave you?

That padding is for protection... American football is VERY physical. These guys are huge, and when there's a pileup... ouch. I'll go look up some of the stats on players for weights and size.

Date: 2004-06-21 11:20 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] beregondsgirl.livejournal.com
All right, I'm back with stats. :D (Just a note, everything is in feet, inches and pounds)

I looked up mostly defense guys, with a few offense. Everyone's from the Green Bay Packers, because I'm from Wisconsin. :P

Name............Height (Ft-In) / Weight

(Position- Defensive Tackle)

Roosevelt Brown 6-2 / 311
Corey Williams 6-3 / 313
Donnell Washington 6-5 / 323

James Lee 6-5 / 325
Cletidus Hunt 6-4 / 238

(Position- Line Backer)

Nick Barnett 6-2 / 240
Na'il Diggs 6-4 / 238
Tony Donald 6-4 / 225
Hannibal Navies 6-3 / 247

(Position- Nose Tackle)

Gilbert Brown 6-2 / 340

(Position- Defensive Back)

Marques Anderson 5-11 / 212
Ahmad Carrol 5-11 / 190
Quentus Cumby 6-1 / 216
Curtis Fuller 5-10 / 191
Al Harris 6-1 185
Michael Hawthorne 6-3 200
Bhawoh Jue 6-0 / 200
Mike Mckenzie 6-0 / 194
Darren Sharper 6-2 / 210

(Position- Defensive Ends)

Earl Cochran 6-5 / 270
Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila 6-4 / 255
Aaron Kampman 6-4 / 286
Ja'Dae McGuire 6-5 / 272
Chukie Nwokorie 6-3 / 288
Kenny Peterson 6-3 / 300
Eric Powell 6-3 / 260
Jamal Reynolds 6-3 / 260

(Position- Tackle [offense])

Kevin Barry 6-4 / 330
Chad Clifton 6-5 / 330
Brennan Curtin 6-9 / 315
Jason Hilliard 6-6 / 340
Jason Jimenez 6-7 / 310
T. Marcus Spriggs 6-3 / 310
Mark Tauscher 6-4 / 320
Mitch White 6-4 / 311

(Position- Quarterback [offense])
Brett Favre 6-2 / 225

All right, all right... I looked up Brett Favre just 'cause I think he's cool. :P

But anyway... as you can see, there's a lot of weight going on here... and running into each other... and sometimes even flipping over each other (which is fun to watch, in a painful sort of way) would be very injurious without padding.

I got everything from www.nfl.com
