Fanfic memes
Oct. 29th, 2004 01:03 pmCam's Meme of the Week:
A fic challenge. Give me one - it can be anything. Though try to make it something I can actually write (if I don't know the fandom, for instance, I can't really write it. Ask if you're unsure if I know a fandom or not). I will pick one from the offered suggestions and write it. Be as specific or broad as you want. Feel free to post anon if you don't want me to know who is suggesting it.

1. You're a handsome devil. What’s your name?
Camilla, Cam or Miss Cam as I'm often known as.
2. Ever write under any other name?
No.
3. Look around you. How did you end up here?
I was born. I was raised. When I was 14, I read Lord of the Rings. When I was 18, I got the Internet and played around in several fandoms. When the movies came, I was lured here and have stayed. So far.
4. Favourite line from the song you're listening to right now, or last listened to?
"We can weigh all the tears in one hand
Against the laughter in the other
We could be hanging around here for centuries
Trying to make sense of this, my dear
While the planets try to get organised
Way above the stratosphere
But they keep bringing out the dead, now
It's easy if we just walk away
They keep bringing out the dead, now
It's been a long, long day."
Nick Cave, Messiah Ward (from the album Abbatoir Blues)
5. What's the last movie you saw that inspired something ficcish in you?
Oy. I suppose that will have to be Return of the King.
6. Is there a character you'd like to write, but can't-- and why the hell can't you?
Hmmm. Morgoth, I guess. It's so very hard to write that kind of evil without going cliche and I don't think I'm quite there.
7. We all hate favourite questions, I know, but-- who's your favourite character (a) to read? (b) to write?
To read: Eowyn.
To write: Gimli.
8. Who's your least favourite character (a) to read? (b) to write?
To read: Legolas. I love him, but most fics slaughter him and thus when I see he's in a story, I wince.
To write: Aragorn. I can never get his voice right.
9. Is there a story you'd like to write, but can't-- and why can't you?
A fic as tribute to Babylon 5 and the love of Sheridan and Delenn, but I fear I could not do it justice, so I don't.
10. What's a title you've always wanted to use, but haven't had the opportunity yet?
Beneath Stars
11. What was the first story you ever completed, and what do you think of it now?
That was a hideous X-Files fic when I was... 15 or 16. Pure mush, I'm afraid. Large plot holes and OOCness about.
12. What was the last story you completed, and what do you think of it now?
That would be Winter Frost, I guess. It was just a little scene I had in my head and wanted to get out. It was all right enough, but nothing spectacular.
13. Where do you do most of your writing?
My bed.
14. Do you have any fic taboos?
Mpreg. No way in heck.
15. What made you start writing fic? Were you filled with creative juices, or was it a random act of plot correction?
It was a desire to write the things I wanted to happen in one particular Canon, really. Wish fulfillment, in a sense.
16. Who has influenced your style the most?
Hard to say. Lindgren as I was growing up, perhaps. Pratchett, Tolkien, Lewis, others.
17. What is the sexiest word?
Touch.
18. What is the least sexy word?
Pearl. I'm sorry, but the image just ruins any mood.
19. What's the word you use too much/often?
Fade.
20. You're a writer. By definition you are plagued and pursued by images. So what image is burned into your brain right now?
Legolas and Gimli walking into the morning, knowing their time together is limited, but refusing to hide in the dark. Love doesn't have to be eternal to deserve the light of day.
21. If you were going to write professionally under an assumed name, what would that name be?
Cammy Sandy, my nickname at school.
22. If you'd made out this survey, what question would you have asked that I didn't?
Which is the best paragraph you have ever written?

Fic request? B5/lotr crossover with Legolas, Gimli and Merry being ones that get shwamped into the Babylon universe. Preferably angsty with no OC slashiness or romance of any sort apart from your favourite couple who are obviously ones you are dying to work with, but have never really been given an opening as you say you can never do them justice. :) I enjoy Legolas/Gimli as much as the next person, but somehow I think the aloof elf with royal pride would suit this type of setting more. And why would I want Pippin and Merry seperated? Simply because they never are...seriously, every damned fic has them both together...it's worth the experiment as to what may occur. It may or may not have a happy ending...as in do they ever get home or do they get blown up...and maybe an insight as to what is happening back in ME and it may be happening either during lotr, or just after. No limit to size, but maybe not as enormous as some of your epics...I love them, but this would be unfair to take up so much time.
The problems occuring with the elf, dwarf and hobbit could occur near the end of the entire Babylon show...where you say it all ended and they are caught up in the turmoil and confusion. (ps: this would also probably get quite a few non-Babylonians, like myself, watching the show for the first time ever).
Have yet to see a B5/lotr crossover...this may be the first. :)
Goodluck with whatever you choose in the future from anyone you think has something...and may it be a real winner of a fic that only you could write!

Date: 2004-10-30 05:44 am (UTC)And of course, my mind at once lept at ways that could work. Down, Nuzgul!
I may have to write this even if I don't choose it for this challenge. It would require a lot of time to get it right so it would work. Hmm-hmmmm. But I think it could be done - they both have that feel of myth. I wonder...

Date: 2004-10-30 06:58 pm (UTC)I'd vote for a Discworld/LOTR, too. I'd like to know whether Radagast the Brown is really related to Ridcully, also the Brown, and what would happen if Saruman teamed up with Lily Weatherwax... ^_^!
*bops on in and decides to offer her two cents*
Date: 2004-10-29 10:54 pm (UTC)1) Thranduil meets Freud. (Oh come on, I had to say it.)
2) Beregond dealing with the families and friends of the guards he killed while trying to save Faramir.
3) Gimli leading the first of his kinsmen into Aglarond.
Yeah, they're all LotR, but my mind isn't functioning today and I'm having troubles thinking in the other fandoms.
Oh, do you mind if I nick that meme questionaire? The questions are really interesting. And out of curiosity, what do you consider the best paragraph you have ever written?
Re: *bops on in and decides to offer her two cents*
Date: 2004-10-30 06:57 am (UTC)FREUD: So talk to me of this Elrond penis envy.
THRANDUIL: ...
Nick the meme if you so desire. I nicked it too, after all. Should have known you'd smack that question back at me, though. Gah, how the heck to answer that...
So I have picked three candidates from three completly different stories and fandoms. Best I could do without going insane. Be so much easier to pick the worst paragraph ever written... One of these days I will start my "Cam interviews LotR authors" series, oh yes.
He is warm in her bed even in the cold air of morning not yet come. His skin clings to her like the grass clings to the dew, desiring moisture like she desires the heat. And she knows both are needed to bring life and she cannot deny him, cannot deny the call of her heart, cannot deny what the dream has told her all along.
Kiss the flame.
~ Kiss the Flame
He clung onto her voice, biting into the cotton fabric, stifling the pain. Darkness became grey, grey became black. The sky. Star-filled, beautiful sky. Whispering, treacherous sky. There was peace in the sky. There was never peace below it.
~ Moments of Solace
How did mortals endure knowing they would lose those they loved? How was this pain possible to bear when he felt as if his heart would break with just one second more of it?
His father’s arms came to greet him, pulling him into a close embrace. He felt his tears being wiped gently away as they had been when he had been a young child and his father’s comfort could ease all pains and chase away all shadows. It was no longer so, but still Legolas did not pull away.
They stood so for a small eternity, as the morning spread out around them and coloured Eryn Lasgalen in the warm yellow of the sun. Neither spoke; they merely stood, the father holding the son while day came and the wind from the north became a gentle wind of the west.

Date: 2004-10-30 01:12 am (UTC)I remember what you said, but as you're asking, I would like to request a Discworld/Lotr crossover. And if you could work Death into that somehow, I would *really* love you.
Forever...
...I might even propose.

Date: 2004-10-30 07:03 am (UTC)Geez, this is the third Discworld related suggestion. Why do you all want me to write that?
And Death's possibly the trickiest character to write, too.

Date: 2004-10-30 02:17 pm (UTC)This might have been rhetorical, but the answer for your 2nd question is: because we want to get you to "try new things"...
...
And because we're evil. Or I am...a little. A *tiny* bit.
I'm sure that the Patrician is difficult, too. But I haven't really attempted either for pity for my readers, so I guess I wouldn't know...

Date: 2004-10-30 06:59 pm (UTC)Or if you're in a slashy mood (or for many other numerous reasons don't want to write the first one) you could try a LOTR/Jane Austen crossover. Mansfield Park, perhaps or Pride and Prejudice.
Sorry these ideas are so weird; my imagination has since Thursday been cruelly warped :P

Date: 2004-10-30 09:17 pm (UTC)Hmmm... I would like to see Gimli in an X-Men crossover.
Bonus points if Shrub dies during a Gimli-meets-Wolverine scene. :)
Yes, i'm in a silly mood today.

Date: 2004-11-01 03:07 am (UTC)Dickens/Hitchhiker's crossover. If possible, include the dreaded Ravenous Bugblatter Beast of Traal and an inadvertent reference to the Shrub.
Oh, god, that's evil. Even for me.
Happy writing!
