Brrr!

I forget how bloody freezing Norway can be sometimes. I've just been standing outside for five hours in pretty freezing cold (-4 or so) in an information stand for Save the Children. To say I'm cold would be an understatement. My widdle toes could chill ice cream. Brrr frecking brrr. And I'm doing it all over again on Wedensday.

But on the cool side (haha, my punning skills slay me) I'm gonna be doing some work in the Save the Children information department. And one of the guys I work with is pretty cute. Ah, shallow joys. But it is also a good charity. My dad is a strong supporter of it and donated his fireworks money to its tsunami fund on New Year's. They're easily likable and they're strong here in Norway.

So I was reading the news today and... Danish troops also abusing Iraqis? Okay, first the US, then the British, now the Danish... This is so not good. Iraq is just a big headache. This was also pretty depressing to read. If a civil war eruts, Iraq is likely to be a mess for decades. The Kurdish will probably take the opportunity to seperate their part of the north if so happens. Ai. Humans sure know how to make a mess. I await the election with a great sense of dread.

In other news, I updated OFUM2 last night. Chapter Thirty-Nine: Cunning Plans Revealed and the Nature of Canon and Krakens. And I got all of two pretty flames after my weeping over having none. Thanks, you two weirdos, you.

Also, icon love. Gift from [livejournal.com profile] norwegianne. Pretty, pretty world. I still have icon spaces left. Anyone got any pretty ones for me? *makes puppy eyes*

Pssst, [livejournal.com profile] eldamere? Something's on its way across the Atlantic to you.

ETA: Princess Ingrid Alexandria's first birthday. Aaaw.

Too bad, Miss Twonk, because you'll just have to wait. I gave you one hint, what more do you want?

Fine, Little Smeghead, have it your way! It's too much to hope for that you're sending me a HaWt Viking, right?

No hot Vikings. You're not that good a girl yet. But I'm sure you'll find it very cute.

Danish troops also abusing Iraqis?

Wanna hear the really bad part? This - and the whole Iraq debacle - is being completely disregarded in the upcoming election campaigns here, because it's less important to the population that having more money per kid. Yay.

See icon.

Why the smeg did Denmark get there in the first place, anyway? Gah.

Meanwhile, in Perth tomorrow it will be 40C.

Bushfire's still burning too, though the smoke must be blowing east now, thankfully.

-4? I assume that's Celsius? Chilly, but not too terrible. It was -15 Farhenheit over the weekend here, or about *counts on fingers* -26C. Really damn cold. On the other hand -4 in either temp scale would get unpleasant after a couple of hours. Wear wool socks...multiple pairs.

Date: 2005-01-21 10:06 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Yeah, it was mostly the fact that I had to be there so long that made it cold. And the wind didn't help. Ugh.

And of course, there's that nasty "no sock wearing" habit of mine...

It's the windchill that gets you. And socks can be usefull when the temperature drops below zero. Do grandmothers in Norway not yell at you for going out underdressed like that? A Russian babushka would have given you a lecture you'd never forget.

I just hate socks. I refuse to wear them. I wear warm boots and warm underwear and all that, but no socks. Except when I go skiing.

I am the exact opposite.

I put on a pair of socks around about April, and don't take them off until September, or they fall off. Whichever comes first.

If it makes you feel better, it hit about fifteen below this morning, and I had to wait outside twenty minutes for the bus :) Oh, and walking from the gym bulding to the academic building, my hair froze. It's all crackly now.

Yay for going outside in subzero weather with wet heads!

Thanks for posting the link to the BBC news homepage. I had actually forgotten that there are Danish troops stationed in Iraq. Do you happen to know whether popular support for this is really so widespread in Denmark as the article seems to indicate?

Sometimes I do wonder why there hasn't been a huge scandal involving German troops in Afghanistan yet. I'm just waiting for the shit to hit the fan one day...

And thanks for posting the next OFUM chapter, too! After reading the BBC article, I did need something to cheer me up a bit.

I know there was demonstrations against the war in Denmark and it was my impression the support was mostly government-driven and that the more leftish sides of the people were stringly against.

But I cannot say anything for sure.
