I was reading an interview here (afraid it is in Norwegian) with our 70-year-old just departed (from the job, that is) Oslo bishop and some of what he said caught my eye. Translated, with his statements in italics.

"I studied two years in the US and the deep-conservative tradition fascinated me. I am systematic and like things to fall into their place. And in that tradition everything does fall very much into place. But when I saw what this did when meeting other people, I came to a point where I though: 'Either I have to put the Bible away, or I have to read it another way.'"
"Why did you have to turn 30 before you accepted female priests?"
"Firm fundamentalistic system is safety-creating. Are you trapped in one such system, you bow and see meaning in it."
"And those who today oppose female and gay priests: Their opinion is not out of ill will, but the fear of doing wrong?"
"The fear of God's judgement, yes."

In Norway, you see, we have gay priests as well as female priests (and one bishop). In fact, one gay priest is married to the city council leader of our capital. But there is deep discussion about this within the church itself. Not all are very happy with it. But where the Norwegian people is going, the church seems to slowly follow. Our church is a "state church", where the government appoints bishops and pay for its running. And extremists find no room. The two rabid anti-abortion priests in Norway got tossed out, for instance (I hear of late they've been in the US to learn American anti-abortion techniques. Oh bother.)

Speaking of others who are in the US - our King and Queen are dining in the White House with the Bushes. And King Harald has been about the White House longer than Bush - as a boy he stayed in (among other places) the White House with President Roosevelt during WW2 (along with other members of our Royal family. The King at the time stayed in London though, where he would speak on the BBC broadcast to occupied Norway). Bush has been there a mere four years. Bet you didn't know that. ;)

In other news:
Interesting BBC article on politics in the US media

Norway gets robbed yet again - Munch paitings gone. Double gah! Stop nicking our national treasures already.

Behold Norway's entry to Eurosong 2005 (There's a link here to listen - where it says 'hør sangen'.) Be very, very afraid.

Leno gets actor to tell Jackson jokes. Am I the only one bloody sick of the Michael Jackson trial already? It's everywhere! Even on the BBC. As one Norwegian commentator put it - "this is the trial that makes the OJ case seem like a small note in Svelvikposten" (local, local, local paper with a circulation of 2000 or so). Obviously, if he's done it, he should go to jail. But what are the chances of this trial giving any kind of fair and unbiased verdict? About as my chances of becoming Mrs. Bush, I think. Now go away so I can write CSI smut, kindly.

As a matter of fact, I didn't know that about the King of Norway -- spiffy stuff to learn. ;)

You're not alone with being sick of the Jackson trial. If I see his face on the internet in one of those stupid banner advertisements ONE MORE TIME I will scream and chuck something unpleasant at whoever put it there. (I never liked his music myself, and while I do hope whoever was wronged finds justice in this trial, I don't need it in my face 24/7!)

Um... that birth control-obsessive wankfest bather... she's really... heh. Sheesh, I hate being argued with myself, because let's face it, being wrong and letting other people see that is no fun. But hey, the mature people realize that learning how to disagree politely or "take your lumps" is a good way to get stronger. It's kind of funny though, the arguing technique this person tries is very much like that of a two or three-year old: clasp your hand over your opponent's mouth so they can't talk, and claim you're right! (And she really wouldn't last as an English major with her sorts of arguments, I can't resist saying that. :P)

I love watching people justify nasty things like trying to hack an LJ... well, no I don't. I wouldn't want to know that just by removing someone from my flist, they'll see fit to hack my journal. :P

Yeah. I find some of his early music quite all right. But I wish the trial could come with a fast forward to the verdict. I don't want to know that three gazillion famous people think him a nice guy. I don't care!

Hehehehehe. Poor little wanker, so unjustly treated. Only not.

Damn, how can we import this attitude toward sex and gays to the US?
I've just been reading about how the conservative mindset offers safety, and it just seems more and more unfixable the more I read.

Hmmm. By becoming a social democracy, start an obsession with cross country skiing and eat lots of frozen pizza?

Or maybe not... One can wonder why Scandinavia has been faster to accept gays and allow gay marriage than many other places. Obviously, we are a lot less conservative in general, but that can't be all. Our laxer attitude to marriage might play in. *ponders*

Holy cow and sheep, indeed.

While the news you're sharing is deeply fascinating, speaking as a Royalty geek: you've got the wrong facts.

King Harald did not live in the White House for the entire war. He stayed there for a bit, and certainly visited it, and Roosevelt's personal home at Hyde Park, a lot, but Crown Princess Märtha, Princess Astrid, Princess Ragnhild and Prince Harald lived in a house called Pook's Hill outside of Washington.

Crown Prince Olav lived in London during the war, with King Olav.

I always blame VG. ;) Hello Magazine is worse, though. (In King Harald's biography it says something about Norway being invaded in 1943)

1943?! Sheesh. That doesn't even make sense - by '43 the war was going icky for the Germans so why would they go after Norway then? I'd think those rather inventive" German magazines were worse than Hello, though.

Ah look, a shameless plug :P :P

In my opinion none of the Norwegian entries had the "true" Eurosong quality. You know, you listen to it, and it completely assaults your system to the degree that you can remember the refrain after it.

Though Wig Wam will probably do well on costume.

It's why I think the Maltese song should have won last year. It had that particular quality. Does anybody remember more of the winning song than the winner looking like Xena?

I remember the refrain and some of the lyrics as well as the horn blowing in the beginning.

We won't find out who will compete for Sweden until next week, there are some good songs but considering some of the contributions I wouldn't get my hopes up.

The nightmare of Eurosong returns. I still hope that Glennis Grace, our entry, doesn't get through the semis so it'll be over for us before it even begins.

Can you help me hack a LJ?

Really, give a person at least the illusion of privacy on the net by respecting flists. They seem to exist for a reason. That person needs to get a life of him-/herself. Sheesh, looks like a wannabee stalker and not a smart one at it.

The whole semi concept is evil. I mean, two days of Eurosong? Before you know it they'll try to make it three - and four... Shudder.

Nope, not the brightest flame in the fireplace that one.

We had about a month ago something called the national eurosong contest (a whole month, one day a week a whole evening of torture and despair) to find who will represent us this time. And during that month all songs ever sung on Eurosong passed the stage on a special evening. (It's become a national obsession. Are they in Norway just as obsessed with Eurosong?)

I've had enough already and it hasn't even started for real yet. *nervous breakdown*

Behold Norway's entry to Eurosong 2005

Erm, okay, that song? The best way I can describe how I feel about it is this - it sounds like the two guys from ABBA got high on crack while listening to the song that goes "we built this city on rock n'roll!!!".

(Maybe Norway could kidnap ABBA and force them to sing for them in Eurosong?)

Date: 2005-03-07 08:07 am (UTC)

Sneeeerk.

Alas, ABBA is all old and wrinkled and not singing anymore. I suppose we could clone them...
