Bro on CSI, Cam on News and Songfics
Apr. 28th, 2005 03:46 pmMy brother, the CSI watcher.
(Watching CSI on DVD, seeing Sara being sad about battered women.)
Me: "Poor Sara, she's had a hard life."
Him: "No, she hasn't. She lied about it all, setting them up. In season12, she'll kill Catherine and Grissom and lock Warrick in an underground vault."
Me: "What about Nick?"
Him: "Oh, he gets turned on by psycho women, so they're together."
(Later.)
Him: "So just when is Grissom act out his hard-on for Sara?"
British legal advice shows doubts over the legality of the Iraq war
Analysis
What the advice shows - and doesn't
All this in an election time for Blair - it cannot be good for Labour. Iraq is the headache that won't go away. It has kinda faded a bit from the main news of late, but the divides the Iraq war exposed, those are still there. And regardless of whether Iraq comes out a viable democratic state or collapses in civil war, those divides will remain.
Sigh. Life is as complicated as humans make it, and humans like to make it very complicated indeed.
In other news:
TV makes you smarter?
Munch paintings burned?
War of the 'Russ'
So, this new rule from ff.net - anyone wanna bet just how many stories might go bye-bye? And how many wangsty tantrums will follow? I noticed GAFF was all gleefully about it, I'm not as much. Still, it will mean Sues can no longer sing Britney Spears in Rivendell. I hear from reliable sources Elrond skip-danced on his balcony upon hearing the news.
I just finished weeding out all lyrics from any story with them on my ff.net account. Bah. After OFUM2 going bye-bye, I'm just not taking any risks. I deleted a few old stories too, they were really just waste of space. Man, I used to write crap. But then, I was young and wangsty and teenage-y.
Maybe I should write a songfic about how wangsty I was...
Which brings me to a meme:
My wangsty life as a songfic. Which song? Your wangsty life as a songfic - which song?

My wangsty theme song? Baby Britian by Elliott Smith (http://www.sweetadeline.net/lbabybrit.html)
As for your songfic? The first thing that popped into my head was "Midnight Sun" by Duran Duran. Hee. I should put more proper thought into this.

Date: 2005-04-28 07:29 am (UTC)Broken glass, rusty nails where the wild violets grow
Say goodbye to the railroad, the mad dogs of summer
And everything that I know
What some men will do here for diamonds
What some men will do here for gold
They're wounded but they just keep on climbing
And sleep by the side of the road
There's a hole in the ladder, a fence we can climb
Mad as a hatter, you're thin as a dime
Go out to the meadow, the hills are a-green
Sing me a rainbow, steal me a dream
Small-time Napoleon's shattered his knees
But he stays in the saddle for Rose
And all his disciples, they shave in the gutter
And they gather what's left of his clothes
What some men will do here for diamonds
What some men will do here for gold
They're wounded but they just keep on climbing
And sleep by the side of the road

Date: 2005-04-28 08:16 am (UTC)513 marching band fics;
1,139 fics based on musicals and plays;
1,532 parodies and spoofs, some of which are undoubtedly filks;
1,115 songfics.
And that's not counting the various fics based on movie musicals, such as
Phantom of the Opera, Swing Kids, Sound of Music, Lion King, Rocky
Horror, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc.
So much for their "we have always had a policy against songfics" speech.

Date: 2005-04-28 12:38 pm (UTC)Yours, I would have to go with this song:
Solitary
Set me aflame and cast me free.
Away, you wretched world of tethers.
Through the endless night and day
I have never wanted more.
Always thought that I would stand
before the faceless name of justice.
Like some law unto myself,
like a child of God again.
And if rain brings winds of change
let it rain on us forever.
I have no doubt from what I've seen
that I have never wanted more.
With this line I'll mark the past
as a symbol of beginning.
I have no doubt from what I've seen
that I have never wanted more.
In this picture stands a man,
far away, alone and distant.
Like a solitary field
in some nameless foreign land.
All around the points of light
start to dim and cease transmitting.
Shadows fell on futile games
and then there was nothing more.
Through the screams of falling steel.
By the light of flares and wisdom.
All the doubts I could not face.
All this time I wanted more.
With a line I'll mark the past
as a symbol of beginning.
To the gods whose names we've lost
and the names who gave in vain.
And if rain brings winds of change
let it rain on us forever.
I have no doubt from what I've seen
that I have never wanted more.
With this line I'll mark the past
as a symbol of beginning.
I have no doubt from what I've seen
that I have never wanted more.
Set me aflame and cast me free.
Away, you wretched world of tethers.
Through the endless night and day
I have never wanted more.
Always thought that I would stand
before the faceless name of justice.
Like some law unto myself,
like a child of God again.
And if rain brings winds of change
let it rain on us forever.
I have no doubt from what I've seen
that I have never wanted more.
With this line I'll mark the past
as a symbol of beginning.
I have no doubt from what I've seen
that I have never wanted more.
Sever the line to the guilty past,
to the ones who brought us nothing
Spoke of futures brave and proud
and brought only hate and war.
Lined the roads with hollow praise.
Marked the land with paper statues.
Shadows fell on their futile ways
and then there was nothing more.
Me, I'd pick this one. (both great songs, actually)
Darkangel by VNV Nation
In your dream you see me clear
I have no restraint, no fear
Powerless I watched from faces I'd assumed.
My purpose set. My will defined.
Caress the air.
Embrace the skies.
Escape the sorrow and restraint of mortal cities.
Give me time I will be clear.
Given time you'll understand
What possesses me to right what you have suffered.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward.
So many years I stood among the thoughts
and tears of those I served.
Among my own I was alone through my own doing.
All the years I walked unknown
behind the faces I assumed.
Powerless to clear your mind of what you'd suffered.
They fall again.
They fall again.
Give me time I will be clear.
Given time you'll understand
What possesses me to right what you have suffered.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward.
There is no faith in which to hide.
Even truth is filled with lies.
Doubting angels fall to walk among the living.
I'm in this mood because of scorn.
I'm in a mood for total war.
To the darkened skies once more and ever onward.
I'd only come here seeking peace.
I'd only come here seeking me.
It seems I came to leave.

Date: 2005-04-28 04:07 pm (UTC)I thought of Norway today. We had a state-wide test for American Literature. A certain question asked about how John should help Sven, a Norway exchange student, write a paper.
During the test, I was headdesk-ing the whole time.

Date: 2005-04-30 03:04 am (UTC)I found Red Dwarf Sims! There's a Rimmer! *orgasms* *dies* (hee)
Am so downloading him when I get home.
I hope there's a Lister, so I can impregnate him with alien twins and call them Jim and Becksley.Re: Hey Stranger...
Date: 2005-04-30 06:50 am (UTC)Miss ya.
Re: Hey Stranger...
Date: 2005-04-30 06:43 pm (UTC)I *should* be able to get on tonight. I *think* we've isolated the spyware problem... but I won't know til I get home and fiddle with it some more.
Of course, I may fall asleep about 6pm, since I only had about 3 hours sleep last night due to kitty scratching at the door, dog barking to go out, and early shift this morning at short notice. *yawns*
If/when I subscribe I'll d/load them and pass 'em on. Do you have Sims 2?
Miss you too. *sniff*
Re: Hey Stranger...
Date: 2005-04-30 07:24 pm (UTC)Football's on tomorrow, so I might not be on much anyway, but the sooner you get the problem solved, the better.
I don't have Sims2 yet, but I'll be getting it this month. Hurrah! Or possibly doooom...
*sniffs too*
