It's May 17th, Norway's National Day. And this year is also the 100th year anniversary of the birth of the modern Norwegian independent state. Yay for us. Do you miss us, Sweden?

I was woken by a loud russe-buss, of course, but that's okay. It's part of the day. And I got up to flag at 8 a.m. This year, it was suggested that the Saami flag - which have been equaled with the Norwegian flag by law - been flagged in Oslo on official flagpoles. The conservative block voted it down - so now Saami flags have been sold in record numbers to Norwegians everywhere. I can't help but find this gleefully funny.

happy birthday to you. May you continue to prosper and be quiet and safe and somewhat dull. And silly too. You are my home, my cradle and the frames around my life. I love you. (And wasn't that disgustingly patriotic? What can I say, the land made me do it.)

Why am I on your friends list?

I think I followed the link here from your FF.net account long before I got an LJ, and liked what I read (mmm, political comments). Then I got my own LJ about a year later, and realized, "Hey, this friends page thing is convenient for reading this person's entries!"

I don't have any flags to wave, so Norway can have a thumbs up from me. (Unless that's some sort of obscene gesture there.)

I'm a fairly introverted person, so I have a hard time making friends. But I went on a friending spree of posters over at YTDAW. People I found interesting and intelligent.

Norway is a nation of introverts. Our idea of a holiday is heading out to nature and stay at a cabin with no running water or electricity and read books. You'd fit right in.

:) Stick around and you'll soon get a lot of rambles on Norwegian politics, as election nears its nagging head.

I'm not a big fan of nature. That doesn't sound right. I love nature. As long as it's very far from me. I'm too much of a city-girl to be able to hang out in the woods for more than very brief moments.

Also, the day doesn't properly start until I've had a very hot shower. And, as evidenced by my daughter last night, I fair poorly when there is no electricity.

However, the reading of the books is totally cool.

And yay politics! Politics I know nothing about. I plan on getting all kinds of edumuckated now! Woot!

Norway's a very reading country. And in Easter, we all go to our cabins and read crime books. I'm not quite sure how this tradition came about, but Easter = reading and watching fictional crime.

Snerk. You'll soon be bored, trust me. Norwegian politics are fairly boring. Even our conservatives like socialist ideas like saving oil money for the future and have gay sex to boot.

Worse yet, I spent the first nearly 6 years of my life on a farm. Alas, the farm was in southern Alberta, where there are no trees. Cause it's a semi-arid desert. The first time I took the bus to West Edmonton Mall (a heinous local if ever there is one), which took us through a serious green space within the city. Yeah, I had a massive panic attack, because all the trees were closing in on me. I'm just slightly claustrophobic.

I'm not sure that Canada is a very reading country. We have more than our share of acclaimed writers, many of whom are regularly shortlisted for the Booker Award. I suppose if I were reading at a cabin, it would be enjoyable. But I'd need access to hot water.

That must suck. I grew up among trees, mountains and fjords and got dragged on mountain treks even as a child, so Norwegian nature just feels like another home to me. But if you get up high enough, no trees.

Well, some of the more modern cabins have hot water and electricity. There's been a slight move towards that. My parents think it's sacrelige, heh. But then, my dad thinks that about a lot of things, including changes to cross country skiing.

Cause whomever forbid that there may be reasonable people.

Yeah, then the world might go forward and where would we end up then?
