"If you take out uncovered meat and place it outside...and the cats come and eat it... whose fault is it, the cats' or the uncovered meat? The uncovered meat is the problem. If she was in her room, in her home, in her hijab, no problem would have occurred."

Excuse me while I have a moment of RAGE. The cleric has apparently apologised and said it was taken out of context and he in no way condones rape, but it hasn't lessened my deep abiding hate of any statement even alluring to women bringing on the rape themselves.

And this is not a 'muslim issue' and any who tries to make it that deserves a good smacking with a fish. This is a human problem. I've seen it being the woman's fault - the woman asking for it - alluded to by men, women, lawyers, good Christians, Fred-Phelps-like batshit Christians, atheists, agnostics, media, people paying attention to the media and on and on. Usually a little more subtle than this case, but in no way less offensive.

No one asks to be raped. It is about the most degrading thing you can do to another human being and it's the fault of no one but the bloody arsehole committing the crime. SO STOP MAKING IT WORSE.

So endeth the rant.

Oh yes, the debate about this has been going here since yesterday. And now the muslim community have accepted his apology. Not that he's apologising for his comments, just that he may have offended people. So everything's alright. Clearly.

I hate those fake apologies. They don't mean "I messed up. I was wrong, I'm sorry". Instead they mean "I am sad that YOU are offended, but I meant what I said."

I love the logic that men are as cats. It makes it all so very simple 'cause, GEE! Cats have no self control, no moral sense. Who can control cats?
Yeah.
Makes all sorts of sense.

And the non-apology apology... its like.. "NEW!! Apology LITE! All the words, none of the meaning! 99% sincerity-free! Try it today!!!"

Gah. >__< People like that... We had a whole conversation about this in my psych class recently. We came to the conclusion that a woman should not have to think, "Okay, now, is this outfit going to get me raped?" when she gets dressed in the morning.

A female student at a nearby university was recently found dead after being missing for a week, and they're calling it homocide. She was last seen leaving a group of friends around 2 AM. That's a common thing in that town; all the college students wander around at night, leaving cafes, going to their dorms, etc. But I've been hearing so many people saying, "Well, what was she doing walking around at two in the morning." BECAUSE SHE WASN'T EXPECTING SOME SICK FUCK TO DECIDE TO KILL HER, THAT'S WHY.

Gahhh...

Date: 2006-10-27 12:09 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
It's such daft logic. Quite a lot of rapes happen in the home - where you're quite often dressed comfortably more than anything else.

It's quite enraging.

Date: 2006-10-26 11:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vulgarweed.livejournal.com
What I've never understood about that line of "logic" is that if men really are that powerless over their predatory instincts, shouldn't they be the ones who should be kept cloistered at home, and not be able to go anywhere without being accompanied by a female relative, and have to wear blindfolds in public, or at least blinders on the side like a draft horse? After all, they're the ones really causing the problems.

Date: 2006-10-27 12:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Yeah, why are no one calling for men to be leashed? They could be taken out on walks with female supervision and maybe let loose to run a little when they've stopped barking at passing women.

And the thing is, it reduces men to the level of animals helpless to control their behavior. No, a cat can't resist uncovered meat, because it's a cat. A man should be able to look at a woman and, no matter how much he desires her, control his urges. Besides, rape isn't even about love or lust . . . argh. In other words, it's an insult to men, but phrased in such a way that it reduces women to "uncovered meat."

Ah yes, another competitor in the all-Australia "Open Mouth, Insert Foot" championships. There's a packed field this year, although over here in WA we're having trouble finding a rival for the current state Education minister.

As [livejournal.com profile] honorh said, the comment is intrinsically degrading to both women and men, because it reduces men to the level of being unable to control their "baser impulses". As a woman, I find this insulting because it places the onus on me to control someone else's behaviour, because they can't manage it themselves. I have enough damn problems with my *own* mental illness, thanks - I'm sure as hell not going to be solicitous and caring about someone else's.

Rape is a crime of power and anger. It's about making someone else do something they don't want to do, and accept something they don't want to accept (for example, sexual behaviour). Sex is the weapon used to commit the crime. This should be something which is taught in schools: Rape is not about sex.

Date: 2006-10-27 10:23 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Rape is mostly not about sex, I'd say. Since individuals are individuals, there'll be exceptions to every rule, including that one.

What did the education minister say, then?

Sigh* Pathetic...and so, so...I am so flabberghasted I cannot seem to find the words.

As for it not being a Muslim issue, I agree. But do you not sometime worry that the muslim community is being held hostage by, I can't think of the word, 'medieval' imams and their hateful views?

I have heard too many comments degrading to women from the mouths of batshit imams, or openly preaching violence in the mosques.

The islamic community worldwide should take a good look at some of their 'so called' religious leaders and truly take them to task when they open their mouths like this.

Apology NOT accepted.

This fool should be kicked out of the imamhood (or whatever they do to demote). Why in the world is a person like this in a leadership role and I imagine this is not the first time he has said this type of thing, just the first time it has gone public. I don't even want to think of what he preaches in the mosque.

Of course, all religions have their idiot wing. The 'christian' anti-abortionists come to mind :)

Sigh*

Let's follow this line of reasoning to its logical conclusion:

1.) From now on, men are not allowed to become policemen, politicians, managers, or anything else that requires unsupervised activity;

2.) No man is not allowed to run loose without direct female supervision and escort, preferably on a leash.

3.) We control the number of males with gender selection at any and all stages of pregnancy.

4.) Male children will be properly schooled and socialized from an early age to respect and obey female authority.

5.) Roaming packs of feral males are filthy, destructive, possibly diseased and can be extremely dangerous. For this reason, municipal and county laws authorize policewomen to shoot any males seen roaming off-leash, except in designated "man parks" where owners can take their men to roam freely during daylight hours.

The male is a useful, amusing and beautiful domestic animal that can be trained to do many useful things and can enrich our lives. But he is also a large, powerful and potentially dangerous animal without the intelligence to control his own actions, and he can revert to uncivilized behavior without warning. We need to recognize this, and to recognize that our males require proper discipline and supervision to be a welcome and useful part of our lives. If your man is undisciplined or vicious, as an owner you must accept responsibility for his unwanted behavior.

(Note for the humor-impaired: yes, that is sarcasm.)

From: [identity profile] anybodybutsara.livejournal.com
I screened a short film with my teenaged daughter about this very subject...I could feel what was coming, but let her watch without ruining it for her so she could make up her own mind on the subject...

We see a young woman covered traditionally, walking along a dark street...She's being discreet, but is being followed...This scene is intercut with a scene of several men sitting around a table in the dark back room of a small business, discussing "what is to be done to bring back our family honour?"...And a 3rd intercut of a young boy sitting in the bright business just outside the room with the older men (it looks like a small deli), he is playing quietly...Back to the young woman and her rape and brutal beating (it wasn't done grapghically, but done in quick shots), then back to the older men referring to "the animal who spat on our family's name must be dealt with", then back to the boy playing...

Next we are at a brightly lit modest home & a lovely young woman is folding laundry...The young boy enters and shoots her...SHE was the rape victim, his sister AND "the animal" the older men were discussing NOT the rapist (as many viewers assumed & were shocked by this ending)...

After the movie, we had a Q&A with the director...There are countless "honour killings" worldwide and they involve a family member (usually a MALE) killing a female relative who has "soiled the family honour" (often by being a VICTIM of rape)...These killings are considered by thier cultures to be "honourable"...

My daughter & I cried together after the director told the audience that this movie was based on the true story of a PREGNANT 16 year old rape victim who was killed by the men in her family to restore the family name...

Sorry to be longwinded, but it's a crime no one seems to speak about...

ABS;(

P.S. We also screened a documentary about prostitution in Islamic countries and how many women turn to selling thier bodies because thier husbands have died or been killed and they aren't considered fit to marry cuz they're poor and don't have a dowry...By Islamic law, the PROSTITUTES are breaking the law (punishable by death, btw), and many of thier customers are GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS (not illegal for the guys, btw)...And they actually "sell" a temporary "marraige" for a few hours so it's "legal" for the men...Yeah...Sooo unfrigginfair...
