1. people hate the contrast between the holocaust and animal slaughter. how do you feel about this?
i feel like it is a fine comparison. 6million people were killed in WWII, yet million and millions of pigs alone are killed annually not to mention the millions of cows, sheep, chickens etc. (Found via here.)

I think it is an apt comparison. I think that people who get offended by the comparison are generally people who believe that humans are entitled to a greater moral status than animals - that suffering endured by humans is somehow worth more than suffering endured by animals. I don't believe that. I grant that we are more intelligent than them, but when we're talking about cows and pigs and chickens, our nervous systems are set up in pretty much the same way, and therefore we experience pain in much the same way. And I think inflicting unnecessary suffering on any creature is wrong period. So knowing a bit about how industrialized farming works - yeah, it's comparable in my mind.

I don't know if I explained myself well. By "apt" I mean that personally do understand the comparison. On the other hand, I know that it is something that upsets people, so it is one I generally avoid making. Except of course, in discussions like these, where someone else brought it up first.

heh Holocaust NOT equal to Industrialized farming, sorry. Nobody every killed animals for reasons of insane bigotry. And I'm pretty sure the victims of various death camps weren't packaged for markets of hungry consumers. I'm not taking a stand here or there on veganism, but simply pointing out the apples and oranges of the thing.

Pelvic exams are like sex? The dude who believes that is clearly repressed to the point where I'm sure any woman's outfit that doesn't include a full body wrap is indecent too. Since he's not married, I worry for any woman he courts--clearly he's not going to know a damned thing about sex.

Yeah, the intent is really the core of the thing. I can understand disgust with modern ways of consumptions and how that consumption is supplied, certainly. But hey, life itself is in many ways built on the concept of one's death making another's meal. "Den enes død, den andres brød" as we say in Norway. Going after humans for eating meat in itself is a bit... Well, seems a bit inane to me, is all.

Since the guy wants such a pure virgin, he's probably after someone who doesn't know enough about sex to realise what a bad, bad shag he is.

I'm probably too much of an unregenerate eater of dead animals to claim an objective POV in this sort of debate; but any comparison of animal slaughter with the Holocaust is guaranteed to make me lose my willingness to even listen to any animal rights' activist in less than 0.5 seconds. Of course, animals can feel pain. However, I don't think they have a consciousness like human beings, with the abilities for reason and self-reflection.

So, even if it's wrong to toss a cow into a crowded van, cart it round Europe without fresh water for 72 hours and then kill the poor, frightened animal, it's not even remotely comparable to the worst instance of genocide ever: to randomly persecuting a human being on the basis of ethnicity/religion,
forcing them out of their homes, imprisoning them, half-starving them to death, making them drag corpses out of the gas chamber and then shoving themselves inside in the end.

Um, sorry, for going off on a sort of self-righteous rant, Cam. The subject is a pet peeve of mine, though. If it weren't considered trolling, I'd probably be screaming at people in the vegetarian comm right now.
