Hee. Google today is Munchified! (The reason being it is Munch's birthday - Munch being the great painter of Norway, which is why it caught my eye.) Munch has really gotten a lot of attention last few years, some related to the thievery and recovery of Scream and Madonna, of course.

Ten Most Bizarre People on Earth. Some of those are... Um, yeah.

Jews attend Iran's controversial Holocauast conferance - Now, Holocaust denial tends to fill me with a sort of cool rage, but the reason for that particular group's attending is kinda interesting.

Over at YTDAW, plans for a G/S ad in the Hollywood Reporter don't go down totally without controversy. (You have to be a member to read the posts.) Is it just me, or do fandom(s) have a sort of wank tipping point, after which anything that possibly could even the tiniest bit wanky do in fact become so?

CSI has so tipped over, me thinks. Not sure if Doctor Who has. And what is the tipping point? Probably different things for different fandoms, really.

[livejournal.com profile] lotus79 is having eye-surgery tomorrow, so cross your fingers for her.

Now, who wants to be helpful for [livejournal.com profile] time_and_chips? I am looking for
- A mood theme with Nine, Ten and Rose all
- Someone willing to do a layout with Nine and Rose and Ten and Rose both. I am willing to give bribes here.
- Beta readers
- Potentially someone to run the OT comm

I will distribute much love to helpful souls.

There was an explosion at the Uni my brother attends and one person was injured. (Not too bad, luckily.) My brother wasn't even on campus during it, but still... Eek. Meanwhile, Norway's still gloom and snowless. Woe.

Explosion? Sounds like my guild, the chemists were involved ^^

Could have a go at the OT comm if you find no one else, I'm kinda used to modding idle boards/comms

I think it was in the chemistry lab, actually, Heh.

That might be cool. Since it's an OT comm, there's not that much modding required topic-wise. Just making sure LJ-cuts are used when needed and that people aren't sniping at each other, really.

[livejournal.com profile] crackified has a moodtheme for both Nine and Ten seasons here.

It's the one I'm using on my LJ, if you want to check it before using it on T&C. If you need someone to upload it, I could do it from next week on :)

Ahah, that looks to be the sort of thing I'm after.

And I have set up a photobucket account just for T&C, so no worries on the uploads. I shall manage that. But thanks and much love for the link!

I really don't know how a discussion of options turned into a something defensive, but I'm not surprised. [livejournal.com profile] slm4gsr stated it very nicely in her comments, and I think they were misconstrued.

Omg was I an instigator of wank? I thought of you when I saw the reaction. Gah!

From: [identity profile] ashiya.livejournal.com
What I'm more curious about is what really brought this on. Is this just another byproduct of the reason why people are doing the letter-writing campaign?

omg you wanker. XD

Date: 2006-12-12 05:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] cutting-rm-flr.livejournal.com
Apparently it is a result of the letter-writing campaign (although that wasn't my take on it from the initial posts). Hence, the reason for the need for greater-scale publicity.

If you read Foxtoast's comments, that's exactly how I feel. For me it's an opportunity cost. Am I more willing to spend my money on option (a) or option (b)? There's no question as to what would be put to greater use in the grand scheme of things, and serve the goal of a "thanks". I just thought I'd argue for option (b) to give people something to think about, not to put anyone on the defensive. But going back to the letter-writing campaign, the purposes don't lie solely in thanks.

I know. I know. *sigh*

Hmmm. Alternatives are always good, and to be honest I prefer a donation to charity than an ad, but I would contribute to both because I'm insane like that. I did take note of the defensiveness of some responses and wondered about that; I guess it's become status quo for the fandom these days.

It's okay, I still love you. ;) *hugs*

*pats* Even the sanest sometimes spark off wank. Such is life. If you can manage to laugh at it, you usually manage to remain sane ;)

There were interesting points made all around, really. But as you said, at some point it just seemed to tip into very defensive.

::cries tears of the emo variety::

I think if I laughed about this right now, I'd look a little psychotic. It's clear that the consensus is for the ad, and it being a CSI board and not a charity board, what can I really expect? I tried to argue the logic of another option, which was promptly shot down (in flames? maybe not, but close to it).

While I completely agree with most of the arguments made, I was a little miffed that our comments were taken out of context. How some people kept going on about how much they already donate to charity, and how much time they spend volunteering. I - we - weren't suggesting or insinuating anything about the philanthopic nature of those that wanted to donate to the ad, we were talking about the one time use of a very large amount of money that has the potential to be gathered by a very involved community.

Options. Discussion. Ect.

I've very sensitive, I don't enjoy defensiveness :(

Guess people felt like you were suggesting otherwise. One problem with just text on a screen is that it is so open to interpretation - that's also the beauty of it at times - that people can read into it insults were none was intended.

It is a huge amount of money, though. Cripes.

You need a drink.

Not sure if Doctor Who has.

Torchwood has,but it seems like DW is made of up just enough politeness that so far it's managed to avoid major wankage. At least, I don't feel afraid to post to communities in DW.

I can be a beta reader.

I must admit my first thought when seeing the suggestion about the ad was of this huge wank in X-Files fandom over an ad they were trying to do some years back. I forget the details, but that there would be wank over this now did cross my mind.

Wank has ruined my mind, it has.

As for CSI related wank-ishness...

I get the feling that when tptb "over there" are questioned, regardless of whether it's one of thier own or not, thier collective sphincters clench...That doesn't make them awful people, but some folks do NOT like thier agendas challenged...By anyone...Ever...

ABS;)

P.S. Can we have hammocks in the wank shelter?...Pwease?

On the plus side though, while everything is still a bit fuzzy (like I am looking through a veil, really. This will pass) I would call it a 200% success so far. I can see! Without glasses!

Now tput more drops in. And then some more. And then more again.

I can think of many, many people who get defensive when called out for various things, myself included. Is a bit of a human reaction, I suspect.

What do you want the hammocks for?

Um...For hammocking...LOL

Guess what?...It just dawned on me, one of my favourite movies of all time (I Remember Mama) was about a Norwegian family living in San Francisco!...I had forgotten how much I loved that movie...That's about all I think I know even vaguely about Norway, though...

:D

Most people's knowledge of Norway tends to boil down to fjords and sex, really. But yeah, a lot of Norwegians emmigrated to America during the late 1800s, early 1900s. At that time, Norway was one of the poorest countries of Europe. Now we're more or less the richest. Times do a-change.

Hammocking is a summer sport.

I don't know whether to be amused or mortified that I am a part of the CSI wank this week! Did I sound like a bitch? I didn't mean to sound like a bitch...

*sigh*

I need a margarita (on the rocks, no salt).

Date: 2006-12-12 11:48 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] misscam.livejournal.com
Be amused, it's easier. And it wasn't really a full-out wank or anything, just had some wankier elements.

I suspect real wank will be what happens if, say, the thing doesn't raise enough money. Or someone takes real issue with suggested ad layout and wanting to yank their money. Or the anti-GSR flock starts an ad drive for an ad wanting no GSR. Etc. I'm just waiting for it.

Margarita's coming up.
