There is just one word for this....
Jan. 10th, 2007 05:04 amFuck.
So my brother, who was staying for Christmas, was originally due to go home today. But then a friend - well, friend of a friend, mostly - of his died. Aged 22. Not directly due to an overdose, but due to drugs causing a heart failure.
Fuck.
22, for crying out loud. The world is so fucked up and then we fuck ourselves up to match. Spleeeendid. So brother is staying for the funeral and I am trying to think of ways to cheer him up. Mostly involving watching silly stuff on TV and slaughtering computer enemies.
Humans. Why, oh why, do we do so much stupid shit to ourselves? And chill, my brother is not doing any drugs. He just has friends from school who have ended up all the wrong places. Don't we all have one of those?

Date: 2007-01-10 04:14 am (UTC)Not trying to excuse the boy's behaviour but sometimes all of us need to escape, some more so than others. Those who are not as strong are taking the relatively easy way out that the drugs provide.
He was my age then. I abhor clichés but maybe now he's at peace. Who knows.

Date: 2007-01-10 05:04 am (UTC)Might I reccommend a Doctor Who marathon? And perhaps some chess, if either of you play? Anubis knows thinking about the moves ahead in chess gets my mind off of other things...
A good, long WoW session would probably help, too.

Date: 2007-01-10 06:02 am (UTC)I think some of us are genetically predisposed to develop problems of this kind, while other people try it, stop it and move on. I really believe that addiction of any kind is a disease, just like alcoholism, which usually goes hand in hand with other drugs. I don't think this kid had much of a choice. But it saddens me that there was no one in his community that took notice and could have introduced him to a treatment program or 12-step-program. But then of course, it was up to him to make this decision and actively engage in that type of change.
Some of us get it and some don't, and a huge percentage of addicts will never get a chance to experience life the way 'normal' people do.
I've lost friends before, and it's never easy to have to watch them spiral out of control. You just hope and wish that they will get it, before 'it' gets them.
Good luck
♥

Date: 2007-01-10 06:17 am (UTC)I second the motion for a Doctor Who marathon. Not only for the distraction value, but because the Doctor is all about hope in the face of soul-crushing despair and going on despite astronomical odds.
In fact, I wish I could procure berths on the TARDIS for your brother and you right now.

Date: 2007-01-10 07:10 am (UTC)Silly stuff on TV sounds like a good way of taking his mind off things. Everything's probably better right at the moment than thinking too much about what just happened...

Date: 2007-01-10 11:57 am (UTC)A distant cousin of mine passed away a few years ago because of drug abuse. He was 32 (the age I am now) and his death was devastating for the whole family. A life wasted for nothing... It's scary to see how many victims of drug addiction are often very young. *is saddened by the tought*

Hang in there for your brother, I'll be thinking of the both of you.
