Hope you all enjoyed your holiday/weekend - and didn't get snowed to despair like I did. Argh, weathersgods. Argh.
Bad weather seems also to have lead to another fatal building collapse after a landslide. Weather, not to be trifled with. (I see it made BBC too..)
Can you imagine waking up at 3 a.m by the building 'jumping' and then collapsing on you? Holy shit. Latest is that there's a gas-fuelled fire going and five people are feared dead.
Live while you can, because there are no guarantees. Yowza.
I see half my flist are talking about A Rapist's View of the World: Joss Whedon and Firefly and... Yeah. I'll let you form your own mind up. (People are rather angry at it here.) I will however say one thing - speaking as one who has actually had experience with rape, can people bloody well stop using stupid metaphores with it already? It's dragged into so much stupid and diluted so much it makes me grit my teeth. You know what is exactly like rape? Rape. You know what isn't like rape? Most things in life. YA RLY.
GAHRGH.
Plans for the week:
- Explore patch 2.4 for WoW. Yay Sunwell. Yay killing Kael for good. Yay new loot.
- Cheer my team to victory in the first football match of the season. That's right. Tippeligaen 2008 is here! Men! Balls! Sunday!
- Finish But For Hope (or How Sex Didn't Heal Rose, but Life Might) finally.
- Plot holiday of awesome for
falena84's visit.
- Decide on a new layout - currently, I'm thinking about a "Complicated is the whole point" one with various ships and stuff I have, though WoW is also a strong contender.
- Kill the snow just with my Glare of Hate and Spring Lust. Give me spring and biking conditions, dammit!
A fannish meme:
You know you have television/films/books/music/fanfiction you're ashamed to admit to liking. Confess!
I admit I have watched... The Bachelor. Several seasons. And kinda enjoyed it in a train-wreck-omg-what sort of way. Help.
You may now hit me with a clam.

I DID THAT FOR ONE SEASON. The one guy was just so hot, ahsfjkafasf. Now I am so tempted to watch the new season on TV here... it's a trainwreck you cannot pull away from.

Date: 2008-03-26 12:53 pm (UTC)Neighbours. Occasionally. Not recently, though.
Also, I have actually got somewhat hooked on So You Think You Can Dance (AU version) since I started taping it for my Dance classes.
Music... Darren Hayes.
Films... the Mists of Avalon. It was godawful but I couldn't stop replaying it
Fanfiction... too many to count. Sometimes when there's no good stuff for a pairing you love and so you just have to read the bad stuff. Yeah.
Books... Virginia Andrews' older stuff. (You know, the ones she actually wrote)

I used to read lots of bad fic. Now I play WoW. Um, yay?

Date: 2008-03-26 12:58 pm (UTC)I know there's no right way of reading a text, perception is subjective and our own experiences colour our way of seeing the world and all that jazz, but seriously the things the OP read in my beloved Firefly are so far off from mine that they almost make me doubtmy ability to understand things.
The rape metaphor is mind-boggling and absolutely poor taste.
Plot holiday of awesome
Yay!
Do not book anything yet, though, because a job sort of fell out of the sky right into my lap which means all my summer plans are on hold, until I find out exactly my working schedule for the next six months.
I don't know if I'm meant to be happy for the job or sad that I've been robbed of my last long summer as a student. :/

Date: 2008-03-26 01:31 pm (UTC)The rape metaphor did not land well with me, as you can imagine. Especially her remarks about Joss Whendon's wife. Why the hell do so many self-proclaimed feminists get so ugly about women? It's not on.
Oooh - well, congrats, and I'll just plan and not book, then. I'm mainly just planning time-wise, so fear not, nothing is in stone yet.
And know the feeling - I got awesome job just as I was really enjoying time off and had been looking forward to two more weeks. But ah well, sometimes opportunity knocks and you just have to answer in your bikini.

Date: 2008-03-26 01:08 pm (UTC)Defining 'rape' so broadly and vaguely empties it out of all meaning and is an insult to women who have suffered through sexual abuse. And I 'love' the fact that radical separatist feminists dismiss the opinions of other women who might not agree with their views as false consciousness instilled by male supremacy. Yeah, way to go there and foster a feeling of sisterhood.

Date: 2008-03-26 01:12 pm (UTC)Dear radical feminists: Plz to stop trivializing rape, kthnxbai.
But the point where I couldn't even read it for the lulz anymore was that bit about white men and women of color blah blah blah. Aside from the personal gut response of OH NO YOU DID NOT JUST DIS MY FAMILY BITCH there's this...is it just me or did she bend so far backwards to be anti-racist she came all the way around to being a BIG DAMN RACIST?
But I will not allow comments that are insulting, woman-hating or potentially silencing of women."
Ah, I see. It's potentially silencing women she doesn't like. Actually silencing women who disagree with her is A-OK.

Date: 2008-03-26 01:43 pm (UTC)I can understand taking away abusive comments and wanting a safe space and all, but sheesh, if you start a debate, allow people to disagree or you're just having a monologue.

Date: 2008-03-26 01:16 pm (UTC)As for the meme: Movie I'm ashamed to admit I like? The Thing Called Love with River Phoenix, Samantha Mathis, and Sandra Bollock. It's silly, and corny, and features lots of country music and line dancing, and River's mumbled acting, but I do so adore it *sigh*
What if I don't wanna?

I know lots of people on my flist admit to loving High School Musical. Sometimes, corny with music is just best of all, it seems.

FAIL. EPIC FAIL. ERROR. ERROR. REBOOT.
My guilty pleasure: Marion Zimmer Bradley's Mists of Avalon (the book and the movie), dance music (a la techno-y remixes of Madonna or Jennifer Lopez or Justin Timberlake), Avril Lavigne's "Girlfriend" (look, it's only because of the high-larious House/Wilson/Amber vid someone did to it), and U2 fanfiction. Also, professional wrestling, but everyone knows I dig that.

Date: 2008-03-26 08:37 pm (UTC)Furthermore, that all-sex-is-rape nonsense offends the ever-livin' shit out of me! You had the stranger-in-the-alley experience. I had the friend-I-thought-I-could-trust-betrayed-me-and-pounced experience. Loving, consensual sex like the kind between Zoe and Wash IS NOT RAPE!! What you went through, what I went through, and the spectrum between---that's rape, and you're right, the only thing that's just like rape is rape.
I may have to slap a bitch with a quahog...
You know you have television/films/books/music/fanfiction you're ashamed to admit to liking. Confess!
Little House on the Prairie. Bruce-Willis-or-applicable-clone-blows-shit-up movies. The Weiss/Hickman Dragonlance books. The Beastie Boys, Glenn Miller, and semi-obscure early 90's proto-emo like the Sisters of Mercy. Self-inserts that don't cross into Mary Suedom, and I loves me a decent hurt/comfort fic, especially if it's slashy.
Also, I like deeply crappy Salisbury steak frozen dinners, though you didn't ask about embarrassing foods.

Date: 2008-03-28 01:37 am (UTC)Like "The first scene opens in a war with Mal and Zoe. Zoe runs around calling Mal ‘sir’ and taking orders off him. I roll my eyes. Not a good start." Mal is the freaking CAPTAIN, Zoe can't exactly go "Dude, I am so not doing that" even if the captain was female she is still ranked lower than him.
Then her racist view of Zoe and Washs relationship. I mean he's white, she's black thus he is a disgusting, raping pervert? That's like insane troll logic, it doesn't even fit in the show that she claims to have watched through twice, I mean Wash worships Zoe and admires her strength, if anything it's one of the healthier relationships out there in TV-land! Though my favourite bit has to be: "...Inara is not paid by any of these men for her time, energy and emotional support." That's where I started laughing because one she is obviously bias in not mentioning that Kaylee doesn't pay either and two Inara's not really being a Companion there, I mean does The Author comfort/reassure her friends/roommates then demand payment? *laughs*
She was obviously searching for things to be wrong with it and if that's her world's view I think she needs some help because she is quickly reaching Fred Phelps level of insanity. I mean all M/F sex is Rape? WTF, that's rather like saying all death is murder. No, ok? Rape is Rape! It's not anything else and nothing else is like it! I mean it can destroy people and to have her paint it with so broad a brush, to treat it so frivolously makes me feel sick.
I do just have to giggle at all the people on the second post though who act like that "Essay" is how all feminists think because all I can think of is this quote, I mean really. *giggles*
And because I can't pass up a meme:
You know you have television/films/books/music/fanfiction you're ashamed to admit to liking. Confess!
TV: 'Degrassi: The Next Generation', I haven't seen much of it, but yeah, I love it. Also 'Lipstick Jungle', I actually enjoy that one so much that I tend to talk to the characters as I watch it....
Film: 'Clerks II', I feel like such a emotionally-stunted-perv to admit to watching it (thrice) and loving it in a OMG-they-didn't kind of way (I mean the donkey scene! *blushes*).
