I'm misscam also at dreamwidth, if anyone wondered. I'll possibly crosspost stuff to there, but I'm not leaving LJ. FYI. I see there's some blah blah over anti-gay marriage ads having appeared on LJ, though as someone rightly pointed out, that goes via a third party.

Ew, still.

Meanwhile, a guy wrote a 80,000 word essay on everything he disliked in the Harry Potter books and how it should be rewritten. And not one word about shipping either, which impresses me. But it does beg the question - if you had 80,000 words to rewrite a Canon of your choice, what would it be and how many words would you devote to what?

I know if I did BSG, there would be at least 20,000 words for more shagging. Because I am easy.

Weekend accomplishments:

- Finished Adama/Roslin piece for Month of Love thing (probably). Anyone willing to give it a look since regular beta already has a piece to do and life is madly busy?
- Posted RPF again. Oops.
- Had icons made out of my photos.
- Lead raid in Ulduar, killed annoying Baby Voice Boss. Played with Iron Council.
- Cleaned up last of garden stuff.
- Made reindeer dinner. Mm, reindeer.

In other news:
- Chrystler may be bought by Fiat - or go bankrupt. judge is still out.
- YouTube helps man deliver baby.
- Swine flu seems to have peaked in Mexico. So maybe now hysteria can too?
- Wife of Italian PM Berlusconi to divorce him.

How was your weekend?

~Pst... I heard something about invite codes necessary for accounts at Dreamwidth... (*hint hint wink wink*)

~If I did BSG, I would do the same thing that you would do. For Twilight, I'd give them more characterization (approx 2,000 words) and Bella/Edward would actually have development (6,000 words). For LotR, I wouldn't change a thing (except maybe give Legolas and Gimli more page time-3,000 words). For HP, I think I'd dedicate 8,000 words to make Ron/Hermione and Harry/Ginny more plausible and natural. :P

~Do reindeer really taste good? *iz skeptic*

~Oh, and I can do beta duty. :]

It's now either pay for an account or have someone nice give you an invite.

I'd need an e-mail for that.

Thirteen Ways of Looking at a Potter Book

if you had 80,000 words to rewrite a Canon of your choice, what would it be and how many words would you devote to what?

I would rewrite Deathly Hallows. Highlights of the rewrite would include:

1) Multiple viewpoints. Everything would NOT be locked into Harry's extremely limited point of view. And we would actually get to see Neville, Luna and Ginny struggling alone against the Death Eaters at Hogwarts.

2) The Camping Trip from Hell would be cut by three-quarters. If not more. It's boring.

3) Harry would stop whining every other line about whether or not Dumbledore had loved him. Dumbledore didn't, and Harry would figure that out fairly early. He wouldn't angst about it, either.

4) Dumbledore/Grindelwald would be overt and unmistakeable. Nothing graphic, just a couple of additions. For example, the note to Grindelwald in Rita Skinner's book would end with the words, "I love you. Albus."

5) Dumbledore would also be shown to be a manipulative old bastard--and Harry would realize it, hate it, and rebel against it. You know, like a NORMAL teenager.

6) Harry/Ginny and Ron/Hermione would be shown in greater detail so that they seemed less like My Redheaded Love Is Pastede On Yay and Bickering Means We Love Each Other.

7) Lily would be shown, not as an idiot couldn't remember to grab the baby and Apparate away before Voldemort caught her, but a shrewd, savvy young woman whom Voldemort trapped and tried to make a magical bargain with. She refused, and her refusal PLUS her sacrifice were what caused Voldemort to discorporate.

Also, James would have enough brains to remember to bring a wand to a wand fight. And Snape would not be a creepy stalker at the age of nine.

8) Peter Pettigrew would actually CHOOSE to help Harry, and in a fairly dramatic way, as we would know that Peter had little free will left and that he was literally choosing to die.

9) Remus would not marry Tonks. DH Tonks would be back to her OotP self, mostly, after that nasty bout of the Imperius Curse that afflicted her in HBP. She would be living happily in London with her fellow Order Member and wife, Hestia Jones.

10) The Veil that Sirius fell through would be a Portkey. Sirius would come back alive around the middle of the book, after a long journey which he mostly had to take the Muggle way to avoid detection. Oh, and he would definitely be in love with Remus. And annoyed that he'd been declared dead prematurely.

11) Harry would have to train and practice and learn to beat Voldemort the final time. There would be no waffling about with Hallows or complicated wandlore that makes no sense. The story demands an active hero, not a passive lump of lead. So the hero would BE active. And, for once in his life, unlucky.

12) There would be consequences for Harry doing evil things, like casting Crucio or Imperio. There would be none of this "Gryffindors are always good, whatever they do" crap. Harry would be shown to be flawed, and he would have to suffer for his mistakes.

13) Harry would die around the middle of the book. And there would be no resurrections. Not only that, he would die pointlessly. He would be killed by pneumonia or a car accident or ptomaine poisoning or something equally random. And Voldemort would still be around, completely undamaged.

I would love that, because it would shock everyone. Everyone in the wizarding world (and in the audience) would expect Harry to come back. And he wouldn't. And gradually it would dawn on everyone that the prophecy on which so much had been built had been a fake, something forcibly inserted into Trelawney's mind, or just flat-out wrong. Harry was never destined to do anything. He COULDN'T save the world by dying for it.

Eventually, the wizarding world would have to work together to save itself. Even more, it would have to change in the process, giving up some of its cherished traditions and prejudices.

Added you over there. :)

I hesitate to think what I'd do with 80,000 words to rewrite Canon in any of my fandoms.

I'm kind of impressed by the 80,000 word essay. If I was involved at all in the HP fandom, I'm be going crazy I think, but that's pretty awesome.

If I can ask, who was involved in your BSG RPF?

WoW news on my end: finally dinged 75 earlier today/tonight. Yay, one level closer. Shattered Sun Offensive Dailies are exquisite for that...

Fark is good for the lulz, as always, if interested.
