Happy Days
Jan. 6th, 2005 05:58 pmI'm back at my place, and with new computer (now I just have to get all my stuff from the laptop over to here - sigh) and my lovely broadband. I even got myself a new webcam that I'm going to install and I've been amusing myself by playing LotR: The Third Age. Now there's a game that would make Tolkien wonder if someone rewrote the book while he was dead. Still, somewhat amusing.
The good news is that the list of missing Norwegian have gone down and we're looking at far less dead than we suspected. This is good, though it hardly diminished the tragedy of it all. We're looking at around a hundred dead, which is still a huge blow to our little land, but not as much as we feared. And compared to Sweden, we were lucky.
Sweden mourns their dead
In more disgusting news, check out the image in this Norwegian newsstory. Apparently, some American Baptist Church is hoping Sweden loses 20,000 as they are "a dirty, disobidient generation" and have "satanic laws". Charming. This is apparently Fred Phelps's church. I see how he got his lovely reputation all right. You'll be happy to know, Fred, that Sweden is missing thousands, though not as many as you would have wanted.
I wish I could smack him with a whale. Then I would get nasty.
ETA: I found their website. Um, yeah...
ETA 2: What Phelps said
Oh ye Gods. I didn't think it was possible for me to be this angry.

Date: 2005-01-06 09:46 am (UTC)He what now? I couldn't read the article, but DAMN! As an American I would like to personally apologize for this fucker. I wonder if these people ever stop to think that Jesus would surely not approve of their stupid signs or mindless hate-spouting. "God hates fags" indeed.
Need any help swinging that whale?

*grumbles*
I admit that I haven't been watching much about the tsunami, partially because the whole thing just seems kind of unbelievable to me.
*hugs to Scandinavia, even if e-hugs really just aren't the same as real hugs* I'm sorry.
*And megahugs to the people where the Tsunami actually hit!* :(

Date: 2005-01-06 10:58 am (UTC)But geez, it's not like little Scandinavia is hurting anyone and the way Phelps and ilk rant about how we're all bedhopping hoes over here you'd think we were guilty of some greater crime than following our convictions. Geez.

Date: 2005-01-06 10:45 am (UTC)*SMITES* I can't believe there are people dumb enough to believe that shit. It was a NATURAL DISASTER. Most of the people dead and missing are KIDS. Are there really people believing that these children deserved to die? That somehow they earned it? *snarls* This... cult are not Christians. I don't even think they qualify as human.
When Phelps die, he's in for a BIG surprise...

Date: 2005-01-06 11:00 am (UTC)Yeah, Phelps think gays deserve death just for what they are and so do Swedes, apparently. As I said, he's a charming fellow.

Granted, I have heard many unflattering comments about Canada lately, but then I live in the vast and uncharted intellectual wastelands of American suburbia, so I take such comments for what they are worth...NOTHING.
My deepest apologies go to you and your country for the vileness spilling from this unspeakable monstrosity posing as a human and a Christian. I feel a desperate yearning to fling Phelps to the lions, except that would be cruel to the lions.

Date: 2005-01-06 03:24 pm (UTC)I guess I notice the Scandinavia hatred more as my country tends to make news of us being mentioned somewhere in the great wide world. The latest I noticed came up during debates in the US about legalizing gay marriage, which Scandinavia has done, so some to the Religious Right felt a need to make us all evil and it was implied we all would turn to raping pets and what-not. *shakes head*
BTW, love the icon. Where'd you get it? Can I snag?

You know, despite 911 and Bali, I really didn't believe there could possibly be that much hate in the world.
And according to the news I saw last night, it looks like he was never at the hospital, but most likely killed in the tsunami. :(
In other news, Howard finally got something right! http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,11873403%5E2703,00.html
As evidenced by even the opposition agreeing with him: http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11875375%255E1702,00.html
I couldn't believe it when they said it was the biggest contribution, though. We gave more than America? Shame on Mr Bush!

Date: 2005-01-06 05:07 pm (UTC)Good for Australia. Would be a shame if this turned into a "Who can give the most?" contest, though. That's not quite what it this is about.
*hisses at the Bush, just because*

Date: 2005-01-06 09:28 pm (UTC)I'd like to direct their attention to a couple of verses:
"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only son, that whosoever believeth in him shall not perish, but have everlasting life. John3:16" That's right, WHOSOEVER.
"He that is without sin, let him cast the first stone. That Acts verse I can never remember the reference for. If I wasn't so sick, I'd look it up." Only one person in the history of the world was qualified to cast that first stone...you'll note he never casted it.
They don't even do that
Date: 2005-01-07 07:45 am (UTC)Except that this type of religious nutcase doesn't even follow Leviticus to the letter-----only the parts that justify hatred. They utterly ignore the parts that say stuff like this:
"The Lord said to Moses, "If any one sins and commits a breach of faith against the Lord by deceiving his neighbor in a matter of deposit or security, or through robbery, or if he has oppressed his neighbor or has found what was lost and lied about it, swearing falsely----in any of all the things which men do and sin therein, when one has sinned and become guilty, he shall restore what he took by robbery, or what he got by oppression, or the deposit which was committed to him, or the lost thing which he found, or anything about which he has sworn falsely; he shall restore it in full, and shall add a fifth to it, and give it to him who it belongs, on the day of his guilt offering."
Lev. 6:1-5
Or this:
"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field to its very border, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the sojourner; I am the Lord your God."
Lev. 19:9-10
"You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. The wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block before the blind, but you shall fear your God: I am the Lord."
Lev. 19:13-14
"You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason with your neighbor, lest you bear sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear any grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord."
Lev. 19:17-18
There's quite a bit more, too, about justice and mercy and hospitality and how to be a good neighbor. And I haven't even touched on the oft-mentioned, oftener-broken prohibitions against things like eating shellfish or cheeseburgers or wearing blended fabric.
So yeah, the self-proclaimed "Bible literalists" take the book literally only so far as it suits their prejudices. After that, they either ignore or twist it, or pretend that it's not really that relevant to today's society, except where it justifies hating certain people.
Hypocrites.
