Remember Fred Phelps and his lot, people? I'm sure you do. So you already know your blood pressure is about to rise, I'm sure. (Got link from [livejournal.com profile] aelie_baby. Thanks.)

The controversial anti-homosexual Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kan., has canceled its plans to stage a protest at the funerals of the five Amish girls executed in their Pennsylvania school, a church official said Wednesday.
Shirley Phelps-Roper, the daughter of church's pastor, told FOXNews.com the group canceled the protests in exchange for an hour of radio time Thursday on syndicated talk-show host Mike Gallagher's radio program.

Oh SWIMMINGLY. So, for this lot of chaaaaaaarming people not to behave like batshit pond-scum with the tact and grace of bee-stung ogres, they get to spew their hateful shit for an hour on some US national radio?

I demand an hour on that show for homosexuals, Swedes, Amish, soldiers and anyone else the "church" might have insulted so they can talk about what a small dick Fred Phelps has and what his obsession with semen might entail nudge nudge wink wink.

Fair's fair, after all.

This may be the most loathesome thing Phelps has ever done.

Even for Fred Phelps, this is a new low. Threatening to use the funerals of innocent victims of a murder rampage, in a quiet community where hate of any sort is the last emotion its members vent, for a homophobic protest? Blackmailing the media into giving them air-time?

I don't often get religious, but here's a line from the Bible that Phelps and his nut-job mates should read, learn and never forget:

Love thy neighbour as thyself.

What the hell? You'd think they like the Amish; those people just want to live in simple, traditional ways as per the Bible. Criminy.

Sometimes, I'm glad I'm Hindu. We've been around, um, before the Bible. So we've mellowed out in the two thousand years or so we have on the Abrahamic faiths.

As a born-and-raised Philadelphian, let's hear three cheers for Fast Eddie for calling Phelps and his batshit-insaneos on their bullshit.

And you had better believe that, had those killings happened in Philly (we've got 200-odd murders in JUST this year, but that's not my point), Phelps and his nutsos wouldn't have been able to get within a hundred miles of the city without getting their asses kicked. And his daughter's just as bigoted and hateful - "brought it on themselves"? "The Amish don't serve God"? What universe does she live in?!

People like these give all religions a bad name.

Excuse me, but I fail to see the connection between those nutters and the girls that got killed in that shooting. Are they actually claiming that was God's punishment to America for tolerating homosexuality? Please tell me I'm wrong.

Or are they just trying to get back at that Governor? Not that this possibility is any better. Or are they just using the funerals to get in the spotlight? That's absolutely disgusting.

And they are getting the chance to talk on a national radio? WTF?

I am physically ill. As a believer and a Baptist no less (which makes me cringe to admit at the moment) I am just... almost beyond words. If any of the people in question have ever actually taken the time to read a Bible, much less try and process what one says, I'd be shocked. Because what they are doing is so far from Christian that it's sick. Sick and twisted and disgusting beyond anything that could ever be acceptable.

My god, it kills me to think of those innocent children and what they went through and these people think it's okay to blackmail the media and the Amish community so they can lay their children to rest in peace???? There are literally not words to explain my horror. None.

Fred Phelps has got to do nothing whatsoever with Christianity, but quite a lot with insanity.

Fred Phelps dies and ends up before the Judgement Seat.

Jesus: Who is this guy?
Phelps: Hey, you know me--I'm the guy who was always staging protests in your Name!
Jesus: I repeat: who is this guy? I don't know him.
Phelps: Fred Phelps! Everybody knows me!
Jesus: I don't. Mike? Bounce this guy, please.

I feel awful for even typing that, but it's what I'm pretty sure will happen to Phelps when he dies. Words cannot express my hate for what he does. The fact that his spokesdaughter claims the Amish "are just in it for themselves" stinks of irony. I hope that the interview host fries them.

The Apostle James said that true religion is to give aid and comfort to widows and children. Phelps and his followers only cause pain. He's hacked the Bible to bits trying to justify his own aims.

I don't know who Mike Gallagher is that's given up this hour of radio time to these nutcases, but I hope he's made it clear exactly when they are going to spew their vitriol on air.

That way, everybody can change their radios to something else for that hour or turn them off completely, and Phelps' insanity will be heard by no one. Self-righteous loons hate to be unheard and ignored, and I can think of no better way to get back at him than to make it as though he and his little loonlings are beneath our attention, that they don't even exist.

o_O I'm more Christian than this guy. I think my DOG is more Christian than this crazy fucker. I'm so sad that Christianity of any denomination is associated to this guy. GUH.

Times like this I'm glad I live in Canada. I would definitely risk going to jail if it meant I could relieve humanity of this guy's brand of insanity. He's definitely up there with Ann Coulter for their ability to piss me off. >:(

Let's have a protest of our own. It's bound to have more people than his idiotic attempts and we'll come armed with rotten eggs.

Okay.... Frankly, I think that this guy is crazy. His website is like a little kid whining about something (Especially when he was insulting the King of Sweeden). Very much craziness.

in the radio station's defense, they're not too happy about it either, but they figured that giving up an hour of airtime for their tripe is better than them showing up to more funerals.

That's it my question is answered. Fred Phelps can in fact be even more of an ass* than even I thought he was capable of.

*Note - I use ass but quite frankly there isn't a word horrible enough in any language to describe this waste of oxygen.

What the fucking fuck? Five innocent children are killed in a horrible way, and this fuckstick wants to picket their funerals? What the hell is wrong with him?

And funny, I would have thought the Amish would be least likely to draw his wrath.

Yeah, so I asked Mum about that mess up in Kansas. And I told her about how they said the tsunami was to punish Sweden. She agreed with me that it was ridiculous to blame them for that... then went on a 15 minute spiel on how the Swedes are a godless people and are so proud of it - like it was a bad thing. *facepalm*

And as for the national radio, I read somewhere that the guy that gave them an hour of his show said it was repulsive to him, but he'd rather they were spending that hour on his show than protesting at the funerals. So I can't really blame him for that. But that's me.
